McCullum expects low-key England white-ball tour of Australia

England's white-ball coach Brendon McCullum expects a lower-profile tour of Australia this month as the team prepares for three one-day internationals and five T20 matches.

Quieter tour anticipated

Last winter's Ashes tour was marked by intense media scrutiny, off-field controversies including a mid-series trip to Noosa, and an incident where captain Ben Stokes clashed with a journalist after riding an e-scooter without a helmet. McCullum, who now oversees only the limited-overs sides, said white-ball tours are different and the focus is on securing results against a strong Australian side.

Lessons from Pakistan

McCullum noted that the flat pitches in Pakistan during the recent tri-series offered valuable experience for England's young, inexperienced bowlers. He views the Australia tour as another important test ahead of the 50-over World Cup in southern Africa in 12 months' time.

Selection competition

Batting all-rounder Jacob Bethell returns from knee surgery and fast bowler Jofra Archer is back after being rested for the Pakistan series. England won only one of four matches in that tri-series and missed the final, but openers Ben Duckett and Tom Banton impressed, creating competition for places. McCullum welcomed the depth, saying the squad will be whittled down to 15 for the World Cup.

Buttler's absence

Wicketkeeper-batter Jos Buttler remains unavailable after hamstring surgery and may not play internationally until September 2027, a month before the World Cup begins. McCullum described Buttler as a once-in-a-generation white-ball player and expressed confidence he will return fully committed to rehabilitation.
