Washington D.C. and Virginia filed a joint federal lawsuit Saturday seeking to block construction of President Donald Trump's proposed triumphal arch, calling the project "flagrantly unlawful" and "legally indefensible" without congressional authorization.
Lawsuit Alleges Irreparable Harm
The suit seeks a temporary restraining order, arguing the two jurisdictions will suffer irreparable injuries including traffic disruptions, environmental degradation, and threats to security and emergency preparations once construction begins.
NCPC Vote Looms
The National Capital Planning Commission is scheduled to vote Thursday on final design approval. The Trump administration has indicated construction could start the same day if the commission approves.
Veterans' Separate Lawsuit
The legal challenge follows a separate lawsuit brought by Vietnam-era veterans who argue the arch would negatively affect visits to Arlington National Cemetery. The administration has submitted sworn declarations from the secretaries of defense and homeland security asserting the project is necessary for national security.
Arch Design Details
The Interior Department recently submitted final plans, which include a golden winged statue resembling the Statue of Liberty atop a 25-story arch with an eternal flame. The arch would stand more than twice the height of the Lincoln Memorial and surpass France's Arc de Triomphe.
Trump has described the arch as a future drone port and ammunition storehouse. The administration has not yet commented on the latest filing.
