Secret Service Deploys Missile Defenses at Mar-a-Lago Amid Threats

By Salma El-Sakka

The U.S. Secret Service has deployed missile defense systems near former President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort and at the recently renamed Donald J. Trump International Airport in Florida, citing a "heightened threat environment" ahead of the midterm elections.

Missile Systems Positioned Near Mar-a-Lago and Airport

Photos taken last week show two AN/TWQ-1 Avenger Air Defense Systems stationed on a barge in Lake Worth Lagoon along the Mar-a-Lago shoreline. An additional Avenger system was installed on the south side of the Palm Beach airport, which was rebranded in honor of Trump earlier this year. U.S. service members in fatigues were also visible near the resort.

Heightened Threat Environment Cited

A Secret Service spokesman said the agency is operating in a heightened threat environment and continuously adapts protective operations with cutting-edge tools. At the Secret Service's request, the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and U.S. Northern Command are providing Counter-Unmanned Aircraft System capabilities. NORAD confirmed the defense systems were installed "in and around" Mar-a-Lago.

Recent Airspace Violations and Security Incidents

Last week, a fighter jet intercepted a civilian aircraft that entered restricted airspace over Mar-a-Lago while Trump was in Florida. The jet executed a standard maneuver to gain the pilot's attention, and the aircraft safely exited. NORAD has intercepted more than 60 aircraft violating flight restrictions around Palm Beach since January. Trump has faced several alleged threats, including an armed man hiding near his Florida golf club in 2024 and a 21-year-old who drove through a Mar-a-Lago gate with a shotgun in February before being shot and killed.

Trump Continues Campaign Schedule

Trump, 80, spent Saturday at Mar-a-Lago after holding a midterm rally in Daytona Beach on Friday. He is scheduled to travel to Kansas and Iowa on Sunday for two more rallies. The White House initially canceled those appearances but reversed course after a reporter asked whether the cancellations were health-related. Trump responded that he feels "perfect" and criticized the reporter.

Midterm Election Outlook

With Election Day approaching, polls indicate Republicans could suffer severe losses amid voter frustration over the cost of living and the ongoing Iran war. Numerous surveys suggest the GOP could lose its majorities in both the House and the Senate.
