Carrick Defends Martinez After Red Card in United Loss at Chelsea

By Basant El-Faramawy

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick refused to say he felt let down by Lisandro Martinez after the defender's red card contributed to a 2-0 defeat at Chelsea on Saturday.

Martinez sent off for two quick bookings

Martinez received two yellow cards in two minutes during the second half at Stamford Bridge. The first came for pulling down Morgan Rogers, and the second for leading with his forearm into Wesley Fofana's throat while defending a corner, conceding a penalty that Cole Palmer converted.

Carrick downplays personal disappointment

Asked by TNT Sports if he felt let down by Martinez, Carrick replied "no." He told Match of the Day the dismissal was a "huge moment" that had major importance on the game.

Joe Cole calls red card 'unfathomable'

Former Chelsea forward Joe Cole, commenting for TNT Sports, described Martinez's sending off as "unfathomable" and said the Argentine had let his teammates down completely. Cole suggested it might suit both parties if Martinez, who is out of contract next summer, leaves in January.

United's improved first half undone

Carrick had restored captain Bruno Fernandes to the lineup after criticism following the Champions League loss at Como. United created chances through Fernandes and Amad Diallo in the first half but failed to capitalize before Martinez's dismissal changed the match.
