Australian Minister Targeted by Threatening Bullet Incident

By Ahmed Abdelsalam

Paul Edbrooke, the Labor member for Frankston in Victoria, Australia, has reported a targeted threat after discovering a bullet left on his car. The bullet, which was found on the bonnet of his vehicle following a community event, was etched with the word 'RAT' and Edbrooke's former five-digit firefighter identification number.

Police Investigation Underway

Victoria Police confirmed that detectives from the security investigation unit are investigating the matter as a threat against a member of the state parliament. Edbrooke, a former firefighter, expressed significant concern regarding the incident, noting that the presence of the bullet suggested he was being followed. He also highlighted the safety risks to his adult children, who also drive the vehicle.

Union Dispute and Social Media Threats

Edbrooke stated that he has been receiving aggressive threats and abuse on social media from a small minority within the United Firefighters Union (UFU). He suggested these individuals were attempting to use intimidation to influence his support regarding a long-running pay dispute between the union and Fire Rescue Victoria, an agency he oversees. The union is currently involved in a dispute that has lasted since 2021.

Condemnation from Union Leadership

Peter Marshall, the Victorian secretary of the UFU, condemned the threat, stating that such actions are contrary to the union's values and do not represent the organization or its members. This follows a controversial video posted by the union where Marshall suggested Edbrooke and Premier Ben Carroll were 'in the gun,' a comment he later clarified referred to the upcoming election at the ballot box.

Political Reactions

Victorian Premier Ben Carroll expressed disgust over the incident, while opposition leader Jess Wilson called for a reduction in political tensions following a separate recent attack on MP Helen Haines. The Greens party also issued a joint statement condemning all forms of threats and intimidation against public figures.
