Oxford Street Pedestrianization Scheme Launches in London

Oxford Street Pedestrianization Scheme Launches in London

By Salma El-Sakka

A major pedestrianization project has officially launched on London's Oxford Street, transforming a one-kilometer stretch into a traffic-free zone. The new scheme, which runs between Orchard Street and Great Portland Street, prohibits buses, taxis, private vehicles, cycles, and scooters from entering the area to create a more vibrant shopping destination.

Economic and Urban Revitalization Goals

London Mayor Sadiq Khan described the implementation as a momentous occasion aimed at revitalizing the West End. The initiative seeks to boost economic growth, create jobs, and transform Oxford Street into a world-class destination comparable to Times Square and the Champs-Élysées. The area, which sees roughly 500,000 daily visitors and generates £3.1 billion annually, is expected to host more cultural and sporting events under the new layout.

Logistics and Future Developments

To minimize disruption during the upcoming Christmas period, deliveries are restricted to the hours between midnight and 7:00 AM, while emergency services maintain full access. Transport changes include new bus stops located approximately 200 meters away on Wigmore Street, Henrietta Place, and Cavendish Place. By spring 2027, the regeneration project plans to introduce over 50 new trees, two public squares, enhanced lighting, and more than 100 new seats and dining tables.

Criticism and Local Concerns

Despite support from major retailers like Selfridges and John Lewis, the project has faced criticism regarding its pace. Tim Barnes, deputy leader of Westminster City Council, warned that the preparations might be rushed, raising concerns that diverted traffic could increase congestion, air pollution, and environmental harm on smaller surrounding streets. Transport officials have stated they will closely monitor the changes to ensure the scheme supports London's continued economic growth.
