An Oregon educator who confronted a teenage gunman at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend said Friday that the pain of the loss will stay with her forever, as authorities detailed the attack that left four people dead on Oct. 15.
Educator's confrontation
Cassidy Schutz, a certified learning specialist at the school, threw her cellphone at the 16-year-old shooter and wrestled with him over his shotgun during the attack, according to a statement released by Bend-La Pine Schools. An armed community member who followed the gunman into the building fatally shot him during the struggle, police said.
Victims and aftermath
Three boys, ages 5, 8, and 11, and a teacher, Megan Lambert, 25, were killed. Another child and a teacher were wounded. The shooting occurred in a special needs classroom, officials said.
Police praise and investigation
Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said Schutz's actions "almost certainly helped prevent more bloodshed." The motive remains undisclosed, and the investigation continues. Schutz asked for privacy in her statement.
