George Russell has stated that finishing second in the championship would hold little significance as teammate Kimi Antonelli nears the title. Following the United States Grand Prix, Antonelli holds a commanding 123-point lead over Russell, placing the Italian driver on the brink of securing the championship in Mexico City next weekend.
Difficult weekend in Austin
Russell finished eighth in Austin, a result that barely kept his mathematical hopes for the title alive. His performance was hindered by an early five-second penalty and a struggle to match the pace of his teammate, who won the race by a massive 13.0-second margin over Charles Leclerc. Russell expressed frustration with the weekend, noting that while he aims to be the best of the rest, a runner-up position does not equate to being a champion.
Toto Wolff defends Russell
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has defended Russell against claims that the driver may never have another shot at a championship title. Responding to suggestions that Russell had been surpassed as the team's lead driver, Wolff asserted that Russell possesses the ability to win if provided with a car that suits his driving style. Wolff noted that the current car's operational window has caused Russell to struggle more than Antonelli, emphasizing that the team must resolve these technical issues.
Championship standings
With Antonelli's dominant lead, the focus remains on the constructors' championship for Mercedes. While Antonelli is poised for victory, the battle for the remaining top spots remains tight, with Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen, and Charles Leclerc all within close proximity in the standings.
