Lando Norris has told Formula 1 drivers to focus on improving their own performance rather than blaming their cars, after Mercedes suggested their 2026 machine does not suit George Russell.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff said on Friday that the car “does not suit” Russell, while his teammate Kimi Antonelli stands on the verge of clinching the drivers’ championship. Antonelli’s ninth win of the season in Austin left him two points short of becoming the youngest F1 champion in history, while Russell finished eighth.
Driving style debate
Russell acknowledged he has been outperformed by Antonelli and explained that the 2026 regulations favor a different driving style, noting he uses more energy by getting on the throttle earlier. Norris, the reigning champion, rejected the idea that cars inherently suit certain drivers, saying every driver can “do a better job” and must adapt.
Norris cited his own experience last season, when he changed his driving approach to overcome Oscar Piastri at McLaren. Russell described his current campaign as the most difficult of his career, admitting he feels “bruised” but confident the setbacks will heal.
