Russell Brand trial: Accusers 'haunted' for years, court hears

By Fatma Younis

At London's Southwark Crown Court on Friday, prosecutors told jurors that six women accusing Russell Brand of rape and sexual assault have been "haunted" for years by the alleged crimes.

Prosecutor describes pattern of abuse

Prosecutor Reil Karmy-Jones KC said the women, none of whom know each other, had nothing to gain from coming forward except closure. She described a pattern where Brand allegedly changed from charming to frightening, ignoring refusals and continuing until he achieved his aim.

Defense highlights clean record

The defense, led by Polly Dyer, noted Brand's only prior conviction was a 1995 cannabis possession fine, with no other cautions or warnings. Brand, 51, denies seven charges: three counts of rape, three of sexual assault, and one of attempted indecent assault.

Wife testifies to character

Brand's wife Laura testified Thursday, calling him a "kind and wonderful father." The prosecutor acknowledged her evidence but noted she was not present during the periods of the alleged offenses.

Trial ongoing
