Gospel legend Kirk Franklin released his 14th studio album, "I Am What I Am," on Friday. The double album features 14 tracks blending contemporary songs and live traditional selections.

Collaborations and criticism

The project includes collaborations with artists such as Karen Clark Sheard of the Clark Sisters, Afrobeats star Davido, Jelly Roll, and GloRilla. The single "This Time" with GloRilla extended Franklin's record to 10 No. 1 hits on Billboard's Hot Gospel Songs chart. Franklin, a 20-time Grammy winner, addressed criticism over his secular partnerships, including recent prayer sessions with Chris Brown and Usher. He said believers sometimes become "judge and jury" and that his focus is reaching those in need.

Personal reflection

The album explores personal struggles, including a 2021 controversy involving his estranged son. The track "Free Me Tonight" references Phil Collins' "In the Air Tonight" and reflects on imperfections and public scrutiny. Franklin described creating the song as cathartic, noting that gospel music can handle raw, unfiltered truth.

Career milestones

Franklin's career spans decades, from the 1997 crossover hit "Stomp (Remix)" with Salt-N-Pepa to recent honors like the Recording Academy's Black Music Collective icon award. He described his art as a lifelong calling rather than entertainment.
