Xabi Alonso explains Estevao Willian's limited Chelsea playing time

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has explained that Brazilian winger Estevao Willian’s limited playing time this season is due to the “context of the games” rather than any attitude issues.

Willian’s slow start after injury

Willian, who missed the World Cup with a hamstring injury, has made only six Premier League appearances and played seven percent of available minutes since returning. Last season he showed flashes of brilliance, including a match-winning contribution against Barcelona in the Champions League.

Alonso backs youngster for future role

“Sure, he will play, the season is long, there will be moments for everyone,” Alonso said. “It’s a process, for the team, for Este and myself. It’s not about attitude, it’s about the context of the games. It’s about adaptation, first year since the injury, it’s early – he will be important.” The manager also ruled out a loan move in January.

Squad rotation and other absentees

Alonso emphasized that several players, including Valentin Barco, Marco Palestra and Danny Welbeck, have also not been regular starters. He said he speaks with Willian about what it takes to be available for selection.

Injury updates ahead of next match

Defender Maxence Lacroix picked up an injury in the midweek Carabao Cup defeat to Liverpool and is expected to be out for a few weeks, likely returning after the international break. Moises Caicedo is fit, while goalkeeper Emi Martinez has a chance to return before the break from a head injury. Jorrel Hato and Joao Pedro remain sidelined, but full-back Pep Chavarria is back in the squad.
