A memorial commemorating the 1958 Munich air disaster that claimed 23 lives, including eight Manchester United players, has been vandalized and items stolen at Manchesterplatz in Munich, the Manchester Munich Memorial Foundation (MMMF) said.
Damage Discovered This Week
The foundation learned earlier this week that a display case had been vandalized and treasured items taken. Manchester United offered to fund repairs, but the charity had already arranged to cover the cost.
Foundation Chair Condemns Act
MMMF chair Ifty Ahmed said the organization was deeply saddened by the vandalism and theft. He emphasized that Manchesterplatz holds enormous significance for the families of the victims and for Manchester United supporters worldwide. Ahmed thanked friends in Munich, particularly the Red Docs, for their continued care and swift action to repair the damage, adding that those responsible cannot steal memories, diminish friendship, or destroy the legacy of those remembered.
Police and Club Contacted
Both Manchester United and Munich Police have been contacted for comment.
Historical Legacy and Current Club Struggles
The 1958 disaster forced United to rebuild under Sir Matt Busby, who led the club to its first European Cup triumph in 1968. United have since won the Champions League twice more, in 1999 and 2008 under Sir Alex Ferguson. However, the team is currently enduring one of its most difficult recent periods, having failed to win any of its last eight matches across all competitions, leading to mounting speculation over manager Michael Carrick’s future. Carrick remains in charge as United prepare to face Chelsea in a Premier League match on Saturday.
