A measles outbreak centered in Amish communities has claimed five lives and infected more than 1,350 people, marking one of the largest such epidemics in the United States in recent years.

Rapid spread across communities

Health officials warn that the highly contagious virus continues to spread rapidly among populations with low vaccination rates. The outbreak has expanded beyond its initial epicenter, prompting urgent calls for immunization.

"No one should feel safe" from the disease, a health official stated, emphasizing that measles can travel quickly through any community where vaccination coverage is insufficient.
