Formula One driver Kimi Antonelli is on the verge of making history as he heads to Mexico City for the upcoming Grand Prix. The 20-year-old Italian is poised to become the sport's youngest-ever champion if he secures a ninth-place finish or higher next Sunday.
Dominant Victory in Texas
Antonelli's championship charge gained massive momentum following a commanding victory at the United States Grand Prix in Texas. Starting from pole position, he maintained control throughout the race, finishing 13 seconds ahead of Charles Leclerc. The win was executed using a one-stop strategy, allowing him to pull away from Max Verstappen early in the race.
Championship Standings and Rivals
Following the Texas race, Antonelli holds a significant 123-point lead over teammate George Russell, with 125 points remaining in the season. Lewis Hamilton remains close in the standings, trailing just behind the leaders. While Russell finished eighth after receiving a five-second penalty, Hamilton secured fourth place, keeping the title race mathematically alive for one more round.
Team Reactions and Mindset
Mercedes boss Toto Wolff hailed the performance as the Italian's best victory of the season, even surpassing his previous win at Monza. Wolff described the drive as the performance of a champion. Antonelli credited his success to his team and the support of his father, Marco, noting that their presence helps him stay relaxed and focused on his performance rather than the championship pressure.
