BBC shelves DIY SOS; Nick Knowles doubts return in current form

By Islam El-Sakka

BBC presenter Nick Knowles has revealed that the long-running renovation show DIY SOS will not return in its current format after the corporation decided to shelve the programme amid budget cuts. Knowles, who has hosted the show since its launch in 1999, said the BBC informed him any future version would be "smaller and more cost-effective," but he expressed doubt that the show's large-scale home transformations could be achieved on a reduced budget.

Knowles shares emotional update on Instagram

In a video posted on Instagram, the 64-year-old presenter called the decision "the end of an era" and thanked the 26,000 volunteers, tradespeople and suppliers who had worked on the show over 26 years. He described the programme as "the most extraordinary experience" and said he found the news "a little bit emotional" despite expecting to be prepared for its conclusion.

BBC plans spin-off 'DIY SOS Rebuilt My Life'

A BBC spokesperson confirmed the show will be rested in 2027 and replaced by a new spin-off titled "DIY SOS Rebuilt My Life," produced by South Shore. The new series will revisit past successes and expand the brand in a more cost-effective way. The final episode of the 35th series aired on 27 October.

Petition gathers 43,000 signatures

A Change.org petition urging the BBC to keep DIY SOS on air has attracted 43,000 signatures, including many from people who have featured on the show. Organiser David Claydon described the programme as "a beacon of hope for those struggling in difficult circumstances" and said ending it would mean "turning away from those in need."

BBC cites £500m savings target

The decision comes as the BBC aims to save £500 million over the next three years. Other programmes cancelled outright include the gameshows Blankety Blank and Celebrity Mastermind, and the stand-up series Live at the Apollo.
