Sir Patrick Stewart, the acclaimed British actor known for his roles in Star Trek and X-Men, has died at age 86. His family confirmed he passed away at his Los Angeles home on Thursday after a brief battle with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia.
Following the announcement, comedian Ricky Gervais paid tribute by posting a blooper reel from Stewart’s 2005 guest appearance on the sitcom Extras. The footage shows Gervais repeatedly breaking into laughter as Stewart delivered lines about a fictional script involving mind control. The scene required around 45 takes and earned Stewart a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor.
In his memoir Making It So, Stewart recalled that Gervais could not stop laughing, particularly at the word “knickers.” Tributes also came from actor Riz Ahmed, who praised Stewart’s voice role in the 2026 Amazon Prime series Bait, calling him a benchmark of artistic greatness. Stewart’s final performance will appear this Christmas in Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday, reprising his role as Professor X. He is survived by his wife Sunny Ozell and children Daniel and Sophie.
