Alonso criticizes 'low-level' F1 drivers after Albon clash

Fernando Alonso has doubled down on his criticism of "low-level" Formula 1 drivers following an on-track collision with Williams' Alex Albon at the United States Grand Prix. The two-time world champion, currently racing for Aston Martin, said the standard of drivers in the bottom third of the grid is "very low" and attributed it to a "lack of talent."

Collision in Austin sparks controversy

The incident occurred on the opening lap in Austin when Albon went into the side of Alonso's car, damaging both vehicles. After the race, Alonso claimed that repeated mistakes and first-lap crashes from certain drivers showed a deficient level. He added that if he were a team principal, he would not be happy with such performances.

Alonso refuses to back down ahead of Mexican Grand Prix

Speaking on Thursday before the Mexican Grand Prix, the 45-year-old Spaniard reiterated his stance. "I think it's simply a very low level of driving and lack of talent," he said. Alonso contrasted the situation with top drivers like Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton, who can recover from poor starts to win races, implying that confidence and talent allow them to wait for opportunities.

Albon disagrees but respects Alonso

Albon, 30, admitted the comments were "not nice to hear" but disagreed with Alonso's assessment. The Williams driver, who previously raced for Red Bull, said the level across the grid is strong and noted that pay drivers are no longer present in F1. He expressed hope that the two would not clash again in Mexico City.

Alonso has scored only seven points this season, while his teammate Lance Stroll remains without a point, alongside Cadillac drivers Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas.
