First Reviews Praise 'Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping' as Best Yet

By Salma El-Sakka

Early critical reactions to "The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping" have declared the prequel the strongest entry in the franchise, with particular praise for lead actor Joseph Zada.

Early Critical Acclaim

Based on Suzanne Collins's 2025 novel, the film follows 16-year-old Haymitch Abernathy (Zada) from District 12 as he competes in the 50th Hunger Games, known as the Second Quarter Quell. Critics described the movie as "near-perfect" and "easily the best" in the series. Film Speak critic Griffin Schiller called Zada a "revelation" who captures Haymitch's rebellious spirit, while Collider's Perri Nemiroff said the actor left her "jaw on the floor time and time again."

Ensemble Cast and Direction

The supporting cast includes Mckenna Grace as Maysilee Donner, Elle Fanning as Effie Trinket, and veterans Glenn Close and Jesse Plemons. Next Best Picture editor Matt Neglia highlighted the casting as "some of the best of the year," noting Close's scene-stealing presence and Plemons channeling the late Philip Seymour Hoffman. Director Francis Lawrence returns to helm the project, with critics noting his ability to balance nihilism and rebellion.

Franchise Legacy and Release

Original stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, and Woody Harrelson reprise their roles in the new film. Lawrence described the reunion on the "Call Her Daddy" podcast as deeply emotional. The original four films, released between 2012 and 2015, grossed over $3.3 billion worldwide. "The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping" is scheduled to open in cinemas on 20 November.
