Kimi Antonelli is on the verge of winning the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship, a result that would make him the sport's youngest-ever champion and the most surprising title winner in 17 years.
Pre-season predictions overturned
Before the season, hardly any experts or bookmakers had Antonelli ahead of teammate George Russell. Sky Sports and BBC pundits all favored Russell, with some bookies listing Antonelli as low as seventh favorite in February testing.
Commanding points lead
After eight months, Antonelli holds a 123-point lead with 125 points remaining. He can clinch the title at the Mexican Grand Prix this Sunday, needing only to avoid a scenario where he finishes ninth or lower while Russell or Lewis Hamilton wins. If not in Mexico, the title will likely be decided the following week in São Paulo.
Dominant race form
Antonelli has won nine races this season compared to Russell's three. His speed has been matched by composure beyond his 20 years, contrasting with a difficult 2025 season where he finished seventh, 159 points behind Russell.
Historical context
The last time a clear number-two driver won the title was Nico Rosberg in 2016. Antonelli's rise is even more unexpected given he is only in his second full season, having won his first race at round two in China. He would become only the third driver to win the championship in his second season, after Lewis Hamilton and Jacques Villeneuve.
Health update
Antonelli missed Thursday media duties due to a viral illness, but Mercedes expects him to be fit for Friday practice.
