Burnham seeks more regional power ahead of devolution summit

Andy Burnham, the mayor of Greater Manchester, said he wants to offer more "regional empowerment" ahead of a devolution summit in Glasgow today.

Burnham indicated interest in transferring more power from Edinburgh to Glasgow. Meanwhile, Scottish First Minister John Swinney urged further devolution from London to Edinburgh.

The prime minister has made devolution a central focus, but the UK government must ensure proposals respect Scottish devolution, Swinney said. The Scottish government has submitted substantive proposals on areas where further devolution could grow Scotland's economy.

The SNP seeks full independence but also calls for the Scottish Parliament to control policy areas currently reserved to London, including taxation, immigration, employment law, and energy policy.
