Australian Hyrox athlete Joanna Wietrzyk said she made the wrong decision by continuing to race after suffering a bout of diarrhoea during a competition in Beijing last month.
Speaking to the BBC, Wietrzyk said her determination to win had clouded her judgement. "I didn't really think about those around me… the decision that I made in hindsight was the wrong decision and I'm truly sorry for everyone that I did affect," she said.
Images of the incident were widely shared online, prompting a strong social media reaction. Wietrzyk said she should not have received such backlash and emphasised that she is only human.
The incident occurred roughly halfway through her event in September.
