By Sohaib Shams

Binance said its initial investigation into a security incident suggests an attacker may have gained access through a compromised laptop belonging to a DevOps engineer, allowing unauthorized withdrawal transactions costing approximately $6.3 billion.

Attack Vector Identified

The cryptocurrency exchange found no evidence that any wallet private keys were leaked and plans to publish a detailed technical post-mortem once the investigation is complete and facts verified.

Financial Impact and Asset Freeze

Binance estimated the total financial impact at about $6.3 billion and said it had worked with blockchain partners to freeze approximately $3 billion in affected assets on-chain.

User Funds Protected

The company stated it will cover all losses from the SAFU fund and its own funds, emphasizing that user funds are safe. An updated Proof of Reserves will be published once remediation is complete.

Investigation Ongoing

As a precaution, Binance temporarily suspended deposits and withdrawals while security checks were underway. It revoked authorization for the affected address and engaged law enforcement agencies and blockchain intelligence partners to trace and recover the funds. Teams are working around the clock to resolve the issue safely and thoroughly.
