Social media users combined fantasy football transfer data and betting market movements to correctly predict that Chelsea striker Joao Pedro would miss the Premier League match against Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge. The leak emerged hours before the official team announcement, highlighting how online communities can breach clubs' attempts to keep line-ups secret.
Fantasy football clues emerge
On the day of the game, betting sites showed Chelsea's probability of scoring multiple goals and winning the match declining steadily from the morning. Meanwhile, a prominent fantasy football account posted that "massive assets" were missing across several matches, drawing attention to Chelsea's popular attacking trio of Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers and Joao Pedro.
Investigative work on social media
An account known as FPL Joe analysed the fantasy teams of individuals linked to the Chelsea dressing room, noting that a staff member had benched Joao Pedro. Another user spotted a Chelsea youth coach transferring Pedro out, while a family member of Morgan Rogers appeared to replace Pedro with Aston Villa's Nicolas Jackson. Pedro was absent from photos of players boarding the team bus, and the official line-up confirmed his omission an hour and 15 minutes before kick-off.
Impact on match preparation
Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou's side went on to win 2-0. The early leak might have given Spurs limited time to adjust, though Chelsea's surprise inclusion of teenager Geovany Quenda on the left flank also caught observers off guard. Had the match been played on a Sunday or Monday, the opposition would have had significantly more preparation time.
Previous leaks and club responses
Similar incidents have occurred before. In the 2020-21 season, fantasy football transfers revealed Jack Grealish's absence for Aston Villa more than 24 hours before a match against Leicester City. Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers acknowledged learning of the injury early, while Villa boss Dean Smith vowed to investigate and subsequently banned players and staff from playing fantasy football. Several other Premier League clubs introduced their own restrictions.
Alonso's reaction and future precautions
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso, known for his secrecy around team news, said he was unaware of the fantasy football leak. "I am not into the fantasy team thing, so I didn't know that," he stated. While Alonso has not indicated plans for a ban, staff at the club's Cobham training ground may exercise greater caution ahead of the next fixture against Manchester United.
