Robert Pattinson Oscar-Worthy in 'Primetime' Film Review

By Fatma Younis

Robert Pattinson stars in Lance Oppenheim's new film "Primetime", which opened in cinemas this week. The film revisits the controversial NBC series "To Catch a Predator" and the ethical dilemmas surrounding its production.

Plot and Setting

The story follows TV host Chris Hansen (Pattinson) and his producer Andie (Merritt Wever) as they face network pressure to deliver more sensational footage for a primetime slot. The narrative also centers on Dan Plum (Skyler Gisondo), a young musical-theatre actor hired to pose as a child decoy in the show's sting operations.

Performances

Pattinson's portrayal of Hansen is described as blisteringly good, capturing the host's smug and sinister demeanor with uncanny precision. His performance is noted for its control, particularly in a key line delivery late in the film. The supporting cast, including Merritt Wever, Skyler Gisondo, and musician Phoebe Bridgers in her acting debut, are all praised for performing at the top level.

Themes and Style

The film handles themes of pedophilia and predation with intelligent sparseness, blending tar-black comedy from Ajon Singh's screenplay with an immersive soundtrack by Ari Balouzian. Because the real-life outcome of "To Catch a Predator" is known, the film functions more as a character study than a conventional thriller.

Release Details

"Primetime" is rated 15 and runs 110 minutes. It is currently in cinemas.
