A historic 15th-century property on Cornwall's north coast has been transformed into the latest addition to The Pig hotel collection, offering a blend of rustic chic design, farm-to-table dining, and direct access to one of the region's best surfing beaches. The Pig at Harlyn Bay sits tucked away down a shingle path within acres of gardens, a short stroll from Harlyn Bay's surf rental shacks, beach bar, and artisanal deli.
Location and Setting
The hotel is a 10-minute drive from Padstow, home to renowned restaurants by chefs Paul Ainsworth and Rick Stein. The long-distance Camel Trail for cycling and walking is 15 minutes away, while Newquay Airport is 30 minutes by car. A vehicle is recommended for exploring the north coast's beaches.
Historic Character and Design
The property mixes architectural styles from Medieval to Jacobean behind a grand Georgian-style facade. Inside, dark walnut-panelled spaces, warren-like passages, roaring fireplaces, and a grand dining room with decorative ceiling mouldings create a cosy atmosphere. Antique and vintage furnishings are purposely mismatched, while the scullery features industrial lighting, slate floors, and shelves of house-made pickles and dried herbs.
Accommodation Options
The main house contains 11 classic rooms with weathered furniture, charcoal and sage green walls, nautical oil paintings, and brass Victorian-style bathroom fixtures. Four large shepherd's wagons in the garden each offer a king-size bed, freestanding bath, log burner, and outdoor shower. Two new Stonehouse buildings add 15 bright, spacious rooms with reclaimed-wood walls, Welsh lambswool throws, and roll-top baths in larger suites. All rooms include Vispring mattresses, Tielle linens, Bramley toiletries, complimentary water, Tunnock's caramel bars, vintage telephones, and khaki waffle bathrobes.
Dining and the 25-Mile Ethos
The Pig hotels operate a "25-mile" sourcing policy, with menus featuring Camel Valley mussels, Cornish sardines, Mevagissy mackerel, and Fowey duck breast. Standout dishes include whole Celtic sea brill with sprouting broccoli and mangalitza lardo, and Middle White pork chop with cider- and mustard-creamed cabbage. The Lobster Shed, set behind a wildflower hedgerow, serves wood-fired seafood under vintage fabric parasols with live music in summer. Breakfast costs £15.95 and includes homemade granola, giant pastries, smoked kippers, and a "Full Pig Out" English breakfast. The wine list emphasizes English producers, guided by experienced sommeliers.
Facilities and Services
The Potting Shed spa offers massages, facials, and body scrubs using homegrown lavender, rosemary, and mint within the gardens. Complimentary daily tours of the restored 1831 walled garden are led by the head gardener. An on-site smokery cures fish and meat. Hunter wellies are available to borrow. Staff provide attentive service, including wheelbarrows for luggage transport from the car park.
Accessibility, Pets, and Families
Two Comfy Terrace rooms in the Stonehouse courtyard building offer accessible features including roll-in bathrooms. The main house's uneven flagstone floors and shingle driveway may challenge guests with reduced mobility. Two rooms allow dogs at an additional cost, though pets are restricted to the grounds. Cots are free, futons can be arranged, and children's menus feature farm-to-table versions of classics like bangers and mash and large fish fingers. A residents' snug provides games, while the nearby beach is the main draw for families.
