The Atlanta Dream forced a decisive Game 7 in the WNBA Finals with an 80-69 victory over the Golden State Valkyries on Thursday. Allisha Gray led the Dream with 23 points, while Rhyne Howard added 21 as Atlanta evened the series at 3-3.
Dream's offensive awakening
After scoring just 22 points in the first half of their Game 5 loss, the Dream matched that total in the first 6:30 of Game 6, racing to a 32-15 lead after the first quarter and a 46-26 advantage at halftime. Atlanta shot 6 of 8 from 3-point range and 11 of 15 overall in the opening period. Coach Karl Smesko said the team returned to its preferred pace and spacing.
Valkyries struggle early
Golden State, which had won Games 4 and 5 with dominant defense, made only 9 of 34 shots in the first half. Guard Veronica Burton called the start "unacceptable," and coach Natalie Nakase said her team failed to match Atlanta's desperation and physicality.
Late rally falls short
The Valkyries cut a 25-point deficit to 11 in the final minutes, led by Gabby Williams' 26 points. A 3-pointer by Gray with 1:57 remaining halted the comeback. Tiffany Hayes fouled out with 5:01 left after a collision.
Game 7 on Saturday
The championship will be decided Saturday night at Golden State, with both teams seeking their first WNBA title. Angel Reese recorded a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds for Atlanta.
