An Indian court has ordered the release of Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka, leaders of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) movement, following their week-long detention in Delhi. A special magistrate issued the release order on Wednesday, despite police attempts to keep the two men in Tihar jail. Both leaders were required to sign a bond pledging to maintain peace.
Background of the Arrests
The arrests were part of a significant crackdown on youth-led protests in the capital. Das and Ranka were initially detained following a CJP march protesting the alleged manipulation of India's electoral rolls. The protest resulted in the barricading of central Delhi and the detention of thousands of young people. Shortly after, the pair were taken into custody again after jumping police barricades to hold an Indian flag at a cordoned-off site in central Delhi, facing charges of trespass and violating the peace.
The Cockroach Janta Party Movement
The CJP movement, which began as online satire earlier this year, has evolved into a significant political force challenging the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The movement, alongside opposition alliances and civil society groups, has demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. They allege that a revision of the electoral roll benefited the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and led to the deletion of over 130 million names from the voter register, a claim the BJP has denied.
Movement Leadership Response
Abhijeet Dipke, the founder of the CJP movement, was also detained on Friday after calling for a peaceful demonstration in solidarity with Das and Ranka. Dipke characterized the recent arrests as attempts to intimidate the movement, stating that the group would not be cowed by the threat of imprisonment. Following the court's ruling, Saurav Das remarked that "truth has triumphed."
