Far-right Senator Flávio Bolsonaro has declared it impossible to concede the results of the Brazilian presidential runoff following Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's victory. The senator stated that his legal team intends to seek the annulment of the election results, citing irregularities in the voting process.
Disputes Over Voting Hours
The controversy centers on a decision by Supreme Court Justice Cristiano Zanin to extend voting hours from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Flávio Bolsonaro described the move as unacceptable, characterizing it as changing the rules of the game while it was already in progress.
The senator further alleged that the decision was influenced by political connections, noting that Justice Zanin had previously served as a lawyer for President Lula and was appointed to the court by him. This follows a period of waiting after fellow justice Kassio Nunes Marques, an appointee of former president Jair Bolsonaro, had not yet ruled on a similar request from the Lula campaign.
Political Context and Precedent
The refusal to acknowledge the defeat mirrors the actions of former president Jair Bolsonaro, who also declined to recognize his loss four years ago. The Senator's legal challenges come amid ongoing scrutiny regarding the impartiality of the electoral court and its rulings during the campaign.
