Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli secured a dominant victory at the U.S. Grand Prix in Austin, Texas, on Sunday. The 20-year-old Italian driver took the lead from the start and maintained a lights-to-flag command of the race, marking his ninth victory of the season.
Championship Outlook
The win places Antonelli on the verge of becoming the 2026 Formula 1 world champion. With five races remaining in the season, he holds a 123-point lead over his closest competitor, with a maximum of 125 points still available. He has a significant opportunity to clinch the title at the upcoming race in Mexico City.
If successful, Antonelli would become the youngest champion in Formula 1 history, breaking the record previously held by Sebastian Vettel. He would also be the first Italian to win the world championship since Alberto Ascari in 1953.
Race Results and Strategy
Antonelli utilized a one-stop strategy, pitting on Lap 25 of 56. While Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen attempted two-stop strategies to close the gap, they were unable to overtake the Mercedes driver. Leclerc finished the race in second place, followed by Verstappen in third. Lewis Hamilton finished fourth, while Antonelli's teammate George Russell secured eighth place after receiving a five-second penalty for leaving the track to gain an advantage.
Podium and Reactions
Following the race, Senator Ted Cruz presented the winner's trophy to Antonelli. The driver expressed his satisfaction with the result, noting that while he is close to securing the championship, he aims to continue fighting for wins in the remaining races of the season.
