Everton have dropped Jack Grealish for Thursday's Carabao Cup tie against Newcastle United after the midfielder missed a training session without authorization, the club announced.
Discipline breach leads to omission
The England international, who is on his second loan spell at Everton, was punished for what the club described as a breach of discipline. Manager David Moyes left him out of the squad altogether, preferring to name two goalkeepers on the bench for the match at Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Grealish had been expected to return after missing Saturday's Premier League defeat to Arsenal due to illness. He had started the previous three league games against Ipswich Town, Hull City and Chelsea but has failed to score in six appearances since rejoining the club on transfer deadline day.
The 29-year-old is in the final season of his contract with Manchester City. Everton have a golden opportunity to reach the Carabao Cup quarter-finals, where they would face League Two side Fleetwood Town following their remarkable victory over Arsenal on Tuesday.
