Kimi Antonelli Misses Mexican GP Media Day Due to Illness

Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli will miss Thursday's media day at the Mexican Grand Prix after suffering a viral illness, the team confirmed.

Title implications

The 20-year-old Italian needs to finish ninth or higher on Sunday to secure the 2026 Formula One world championship in Mexico City. Even if he scores no points, the title race would only extend to Brazil next week if teammate George Russell or Lewis Hamilton wins the race.

Recent form and team statement

Antonelli won the United States Grand Prix in Austin last Sunday, his ninth victory of the season. Mercedes said he was excused from mandatory FIA media duties as a precaution and is expected to return for Friday's two practice sessions at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.

Championship standings

Antonelli leads Russell by 123 points with 125 points remaining. He is poised to become the sport's youngest-ever champion, achieving the feat in only his second season after replacing Hamilton at Mercedes last year.

Race schedule

The Mexican Grand Prix starts at 8pm GMT on Sunday.
