South Africa's careless dismissals give Australia series-winning chance

South Africa's bid to level the three-match Test series against Australia faltered on day three in Cape Town as careless batting handed the tourists a clear path to victory. The Proteas reached stumps at 140 for four, leading by only 40 runs, after losing both openers and captain Temba Bavuma to poor shot selection.

Top order failures

Aiden Markram fell for one, driving Mitchell Starc straight to mid-off, while David Bedingham repeated his first-innings mistake by top-edging a pull shot to Josh Hazlewood off Starc. Former South Africa bowler Vernon Philander called Bedingham's dismissal "absolutely soft," noting he had been targeted with the same short-ball ploy twice in the match. Bedingham has now been dismissed pulling five times in 18 Tests.

Bavuma falls late

Captain Temba Bavuma had anchored a 17.3-over partnership with Matthew Breetzke, scoring 35 off 115 balls with just one boundary. With four minutes left in the day, Australia captain Pat Cummins introduced a silly point for Nathan Lyon, tempting Bavuma into a forced shot through mid-wicket that resulted in his dismissal. Australia's celebrations indicated they viewed the wicket as pivotal.

Earlier, South Africa's bowlers had rallied to take the last six Australian wickets for 99 runs, limiting the first-innings lead to exactly 100. Josh Inglis scored a second Test century (102) before falling to Simon Harmer, who finished with four for 104. Alex Carey contributed 80.

South Africa still have Breetzke (62 not out), Ryan Rickelton, triple-centurion Wiaan Mulder, and in-form all-rounder Marco Jansen to come, but the vicious turn Lyon extracted suggests any chase over 200 will be difficult. Australia have held firm throughout the match while South Africa have faltered at key moments, a pattern England will note ahead of their tour later this year.
