Bruno Fernandes stays Man Utd captain, Carrick confirms

By Islam El-Sakka

Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick has confirmed that Bruno Fernandes will continue as club captain, describing the midfielder as "fully committed" to the team.

Clear-the-air talks

Carrick and Fernandes held discussions at the club's Carrington training ground on Tuesday after the Portuguese international was dropped to the bench for Sunday's 3-0 home defeat by Bournemouth. The decision followed Fernandes' public questioning of tactics after a 4-1 Champions League loss to Como. Carrick said there is "no decision to be made" regarding the captaincy and that Fernandes has led the team well for years.

Carrick's future

The 45-year-old coach will remain in charge for Saturday's Premier League trip to Chelsea despite United's eight-game winless run, their worst since the 2015-16 season. Talks involving the Glazer family, minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, chief executive Omar Berrada and football director Jason Wilcox preceded the confirmation of Carrick's immediate future. Carrick insisted he does not need assurances about his position.
