Kim Jong-un Visits China via New Yalu River Bridge

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un traveled to the Chinese border city of Dandong on Saturday, marking his first visit to China since September 2025. The visit included the inauguration of the New Yalu River Bridge, a 3-kilometer structure connecting the two nations that officially opened in mid-October following years of construction delays.

Strengthening Bilateral Ties

During the visit, Kim met with Wang Huning, a member of the standing committee of China’s Communist Party. The two leaders toured a local car factory and expressed a shared commitment to strengthening bilateral relations. Kim stated that North Korea is prepared to work with China to advance their historical friendship and expand practical cooperation to benefit the citizens of both countries.

Strategic Timing and Regional Context

The visit coincides with the anniversary of China’s first major victory in the Korean War. In anticipation of the high-profile event, local authorities in Dandong reportedly imposed traffic controls around the bridge and restricted hotel bookings near a museum documenting China's role in the war.

This trip follows North Korea's recent opening of a road bridge with Russia, further linking Pyongyang to its primary international backers via land routes. While there has been speculation regarding potential diplomatic shifts, including a possible meeting between Kim and Donald Trump during the upcoming Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Shenzhen, US and South Korean officials have indicated that such a meeting is unlikely this year.
