Aung San Suu Kyi is strong but isolated, says son

By Islam El-Sakka

Kim Aris, the son of Myanmar's detained leader Aung San Suu Kyi, has stated that his mother appears to be in good mental and physical health despite living in near-complete isolation. Speaking after his first phone call with the 81-year-old Nobel laureate in over five years, Aris noted that while she sounds strong, she appears to be held in solitary confinement with almost no contact outside of military or police personnel.

A Public Relations Move

Aris, who spoke to his mother at the Myanmar embassy in London, characterized the opportunity to communicate as a "public relations" tactic by the country's military leaders. He suggested the move was intended to improve the junta's international image, noting that military chief Min Aung Hlaing has recently attempted to rebuild diplomatic ties and adopt a more civilian appearance following widely criticized elections.

Conditions of Detention

The former democratic leader has been held since the 2021 military coup and is believed to be located at a fenced residence in Naypyidaw. Aris expressed concern that his mother remains cut off from the outside world, lacking access to newspapers, radio, or television. He described recent government-released images of her as orchestrated stunts designed to create a false impression of fair treatment.

A Legacy of Political Struggle

Aung San Suu Kyi has spent much of her life under house arrest for her pro-democracy leadership. Aris remarked that global support for his mother has diminished significantly following the Rohingya crisis, and he criticized the international community for overlooking the current suffering in Myanmar. He emphasized that the military has worked continuously to undermine her position and the fragile democracy she attempted to lead.
