The Hunger Games prequel "Sunrise on the Reaping" has garnered overwhelmingly positive early reactions from critics, with many calling it the best film in the franchise. The movie stars Joseph Zada as a young Haymitch Abernathy and is scheduled to open in cinemas on 20 November.
Critics hail Joseph Zada as standout
Film Speak critic Griffin Schiller described Zada as a "revelation" who perfectly captures Haymitch's love of people, pain, and rebellious spirit. Collider's Perri Nemiroff wrote that Zada had her "jaw on the floor time and time again" during the film.
Supporting cast receives high praise
Mckenna Grace's performance as Maysilee Donner was singled out for its simmering ferocity. Matt Neglia, editor-in-chief of Next Best Picture, called the ensemble "some of the best casting of the year," highlighting Glenn Close and Jesse Plemons as scene-stealers.
Story revisits 50th Hunger Games
Based on Suzanne Collins's 2025 novel, the film follows 16-year-old Haymitch from District 12 as he competes in the Second Quarter Quell. Critics noted the story challenges implicit submission to authoritarian systems and delivers a powerful third act.
Original franchise stars reunite
Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, and Woody Harrelson reprise their roles as Katniss, Peeta, and the older Haymitch. Lawrence described the reunion on the "Call Her Daddy" podcast as deeply emotional, saying she and Hutcherson "didn't walk to the bathroom without our arms around each other."
Release scheduled for November 20
The original four Hunger Games films, released from 2012 to 2015, grossed over $3.3 billion worldwide. The prequel is directed by Francis Lawrence and produced by Lionsgate.
