A Florida woman dressed in a banana costume has gained widespread attention after rushing to call 911 following a car accident in Orlando. The incident occurred around 4 a.m. on Saturday when a vehicle traveling on the wrong side of the road crashed into the outdoor dining area of The Moderne Bar on Colonial Drive.
A Bizarre Scene Captured on Video
Stephanie Oropeza and her fiancé were traveling home from a Halloween party when they witnessed the crash. Surveillance footage from the restaurant captured Oropeza, still wearing her costume, immediately using her phone to contact emergency services. The impact caused significant damage to the establishment's outdoor seating area, destroying at least six tables and dozens of chairs.
Restaurant Owner Reacts to Viral Footage
Michael Nguyen, the owner of The Moderne Bar, shared the surveillance video in an effort to identify the woman, who was quickly recognized by the community. Nguyen noted that the footage was so unusual that some viewers initially questioned if it was AI-generated. He described the unexpected hero as a rogue banana roaming the streets of Mills and saving the day by reporting the incident.
Community Recognition and Damage Estimates
While no injuries were reported in the accident, the property damage is substantial. Nguyen estimated that repairs to the restaurant could cost between $30,000 and $50,000. In recognition of her quick actions, the restaurant provided Oropeza with a free meal. Oropeza expressed that while she found the viral attention amusing, she hopes her actions encourage others to assist those in need during emergencies.
