Estevao Struggles for Minutes as Chelsea's Forgotten Man

By Ahmed Abdelsalam

Brazilian forward Estevao, 19, arrived at Chelsea from Palmeiras last summer and announced himself with a last-gasp winner against Liverpool in October. Twelve months later, he finds himself on the fringes of Xabi Alonso's squad, having made just two starts across all competitions this season and totalling only 172 minutes on the pitch.

Limited Opportunities Under Alonso

Since Alonso took charge in the summer, Estevao has not started any of Chelsea's eight Premier League matches. His only starts came in early Carabao Cup ties against Luton Town and Leeds United, and he was withdrawn at half-time in the latter despite Chelsea trailing. On Wednesday night, as Chelsea lost a penalty shootout to Liverpool in the Carabao Cup quarterfinal at Anfield, Estevao remained an unused substitute. Alonso made five changes, including handing a debut to summer signing Emanuel Emegha, but the Brazilian never left the bench.

Alonso's Explanation

After the match, Alonso acknowledged Estevao's frustration, saying: "He could be happier. He wants to play. I'm sure Estevao will have his moment, it is my responsibility." The manager suggested the forward is still adapting to the physical intensity of English football and pointed to cramp issues among other players as a factor in his substitution decisions.

Neto's Form Blocks Path

One major obstacle is the resurgence of Pedro Neto. The Portugal international, once linked with a move to Saudi Arabia, has started seven of eight Premier League games under Alonso and recently signed a new six-year contract. Neto operates in a hybrid wing-back role on the right flank — Estevao's preferred position — and his defensive solidity has made him Alonso's first choice. Former Reading midfielder Jobi McAnuff described Estevao as "a victim of the system."

Attacking Depth Limits Chances

Chelsea's forward line is also crowded with Joao Pedro, Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers, the latter a £117m signing from Aston Villa. Even with Palmer suspended and Joao Pedro injured against Liverpool, Estevao was not considered. Former Crystal Palace striker Clinton Morrison said: "How Estevao has not got on the pitch tonight, I do not know."

Hope for Revival

Estevao will be hoping to emulate Neto's turnaround and force his way into Alonso's plans as the season progresses.
