Arsenal secured a 3-0 victory over Benfica at Meadow Park in the Women's Champions League, with Alessia Russo scoring a historic hat-trick.

Russo breaks English scoring record

Russo's three goals took her tally to 23 in the competition, surpassing Fran Kirby's previous record of 21 for an English player. Her first came in the 39th minute, a low finish off the far post from Caitlin Foord's pass. She added a header midway through the second half and completed the hat-trick from the penalty spot in the 79th minute after Catarina Amado fouled Foord.

Arsenal dominate but miss early chances

Arsenal, managed by Renee Slegers, handed first starts to Elisa De Almeida and Geraldine Reuteler. The hosts created numerous opportunities in the first half, with Russo's header tipped away and Olivia Smith's effort saved. Benfica's best chance saw Froya Dorsin's long-range shot clear the crossbar.

Chelsea maintain perfect European start

In the other Group B match, Chelsea beat Roma 2-0 at Plough Lane. Substitute Ellie Carpenter opened the scoring in the 51st minute after combining with Wieke Kaptein, and Kadeisha Buchanan sealed the win in the 89th minute. The victory gives Sonia Bompastor's side a second win in three European fixtures.
