Moscow has been selected to host the 2030 World Weightlifting Championships, marking the first time an Olympic federation has chosen to hold a global event in Russia since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in 2022.
A Significant Sporting Return
The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) announced the decision on Sunday. This follows the federation's confirmation four months ago that Russian athletes would once again be eligible to compete in its sanctioned events. The event also serves as a qualifying competition for the 2032 Olympic Games in Brisbane, Australia.
The Russian Weightlifting Federation noted that it is the first Olympic sports federation to successfully bring a top-level official competition back to the country in many years. Federation president Aleksandr Vinokurov expressed gratitude to the IWF for their trust, stating that Moscow possesses the modern infrastructure and experience required to host major international sporting events.
Context of International Sanctions
No world championships for a summer or winter Olympic sport have been held in Russia since the conflict in Ukraine commenced. For example, the 2025 World Aquatics Championships, which were originally scheduled for Kazan, were relocated to Singapore.
This decision follows the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) move in July to provisionally lift the suspension on the Russian Olympic Committee. While this move potentially allows Russian athletes to compete at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, the IOC has maintained that it will not organize its own events in Russia or invite Russian government officials to its gatherings. It has also not reached a final decision regarding the use of the Russian flag or anthem at Olympic Games.
Global Championship Schedule
In addition to the Moscow announcement, the IWF revealed host cities for several other championships. The 2029 senior world championships will take place in Ahmedabad, India. The 2026 IWF World Championships are scheduled to be held in Ningbo, China, from October 27 to November 8, with Ukrainian athletes among those listed to compete.
