Mary Peltola Delays Campaign Events After Car Crash

By Fatma Younis

Senate candidate Mary Peltola is rescheduling several upcoming campaign events after she and her family sustained minor injuries in a car accident. The campaign announced on Sunday that Peltola will postpone scheduled appearances in Fairbanks and Bethel until later in the week to allow for recovery, following medical advice.

Details of the Collision

The accident occurred on Saturday while Peltola and her family were traveling to the Alaska Federation of Natives' annual banquet. According to the campaign, their vehicle was struck by another driver. A campaign spokesperson stated there is no reason to believe the incident was politically motivated.

Anchorage police confirmed that the collision involved three vehicles. Authorities reported that those involved sustained non-life-threatening injuries, and the incident remains under investigation.

Political Context in Alaska

Peltola, a Democrat, is currently engaged in a competitive Senate race against Republican incumbent Dan Sullivan. The election follows her previous service in the House, where she was elected in 2022 but narrowly lost her re-election bid in 2024.

The race has seen various legal and political developments, including a Justice Department lawsuit regarding potential voter confusion due to the presence of another candidate with a similar name on the ballot. Peltola's campaign intends to resume her Alaska Always Tour once she has recovered.
