Senator Adam Schiff has called for Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to testify before the Senate regarding the Starlink satellite service limitations that recently disrupted Ukrainian military operations. The California Democrat stated that anyone with knowledge of the slowdown should be brought in to provide clarity on the matter.
Conflicting Accounts of Service Disruptions
The call for testimony follows reports of disruptions to Starlink and Starshield, the military network utilized by Ukraine. While Ukrainian officials noted that the systems returned to high speeds recently, the previous service limitations made it more difficult for forces to intercept incoming Russian attacks. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy previously suggested that the decision to limit Starlink speeds originated from the U.S. government, noting that SpaceX technically implemented the restrictions following American instructions.
Contradictory Statements from Officials and Musk
Senator Schiff highlighted the inconsistencies between various leaders regarding the situation. He noted that while President Donald Trump claimed Elon Musk had restored service, and the Trump administration has denied requesting changes to Starlink operations, Musk has provided different explanations. Musk recently accused Ukraine of violating Starlink terms of service by using the system for offensive strikes, asserting that the company was simply enforcing its rules after loopholes were bypassed.
National Security Concerns
Schiff expressed significant concern regarding the influence of private individuals on international security, stating that the world’s richest person should not control national security interests. He questioned why the service parameters changed and what impact those changes had on Ukraine's ability to defend itself. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has denied reports that the U.S. government denied Ukraine necessary services for its defense, labeling such claims as inaccurate.
