Welsh singer Jamie Miller has reached the top of the UK singles chart with his viral hit "Babydoll," becoming the first Welsh artist to achieve the feat in 15 years. The 29-year-old from Pontprennau, Cardiff, said the milestone feels surreal after a challenging period that included a two-year hiatus from music.
Chart history made
Miller's single climbed to number one last week, marking the first time a Welsh artist has led the chart since Sian Evans featured on DJ Fresh's "Louder." He is also the first solo male Welsh artist to top the singles chart in 41 years, following Shakin' Stevens' 1985 Christmas hit "Merry Christmas Everyone."
Viral breakthrough on TikTok
The song gained momentum after actress Jennifer Love Hewitt posted videos featuring the track on TikTok. Miller attributes its resonance to the "genuineness" of his performance, reflecting personal struggles during his time away from music. "The world's in a little bit of a dark place right now so maybe that's why it's made people come together," he said.
From The Voice to Strictly Come Dancing
Miller previously reached the final of The Voice UK in 2017. Last weekend he performed "Babydoll" on Strictly Come Dancing alongside actor Antonio Cipriano, a moment he described as emotional. Presenter Emma Willis, who hosted The Voice during his appearance, has been a longtime supporter.
World tour plans and message to fans
The singer is now planning a world tour, with intentions to include shows in Wales. Addressing fans, Miller encouraged them to be "delusional with your dreams" and emphasized self-belief. "If you don't believe in you, no one's going to believe in you," he said.
