Peter Geiger, known as "Mr. Halloween," will distribute more than 14,000 king-sized candy bars on Saturday at his business in Lewiston, Maine, continuing a tradition spanning over 30 years.
Longtime tradition expands
The 70-year-old former Farmers' Almanac editor sold the publication earlier this year. He told WMTW he is adding more inflatable monsters, spooky characters, and a bubble machine for this year's event.
Secret password required
Visitors must know a secret password to receive a candy bar. Geiger will reveal the password on Friday. The annual giveaway has become a Halloween tradition for families in the Lewiston-Auburn area.
Event grows each year
Last year's giveaway featured 10,000 king-sized bars, 8,500 mini bars in a witch's cauldron, more than 35 inflatable and mechanical creatures, a DJ, and three five-pound chocolate bars for the 1,000th, 2,000th, and 3,000th visitors. In 2024, Geiger handed out 8,260 king-sized bars.
Community focus
"This has become such an event in Lewiston and Auburn, and I want to make it as much fun as I could possibly do," Geiger said. "I think what really drives me on this is the fact that it's families. They're having fun, they're laughing, they're dressed up in all kinds of costumes."
Local business support
Maine department store Reny's helped make the massive candy giveaway possible with a donation.
