Broadcasting legend Ernie Johnson announced Wednesday he will step down as host of "Inside the NBA" once the 2026-27 season concludes, ending a 37-year tenure with the popular pre- and post-game studio show.
Johnson cites health, plans to continue NCAA work
Johnson, 70, said in a video posted to social media that the decision was his alone and not a retirement. He cited heart issues in recent years as one factor behind the move, describing it as "just cutting back." Johnson intends to keep working, with CBS and Turner Sports' coverage of the NCAA men's basketball tournament remaining a notable part of his schedule.
Longtime colleagues also nearing exits
The show, which moved from TNT to ESPN and ABC last season, features retired NBA stars Shaquille O'Neal, Charles Barkley, and Kenny Smith. Barkley said in September he expects the 2026-27 season to be his last on the program.
ESPN chairman praises Johnson's legacy
ESPN chairman Jimmy Pitaro called Johnson "one of sports media's most respected and beloved figures" and said the network looks forward to celebrating him throughout the season. The show has won 21 Sports Emmy Awards.
The 2026-27 NBA season began last week, with LeBron James leading the Philadelphia 76ers to a win over the defending champion New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden.
