Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan has defended the 26-year age gap with his wife Chloe Mendel in a recent interview, sparking criticism that his rationale relies on outdated purity culture tropes.
Corgan's Explanation
In an interview with The New York Times' Popcast, Corgan, 59, said he struggled to connect with women of his generation because they had been "wounded" by politics and abuse, while Mendel's youth meant she "hadn't been wounded like so many people are." He described her youth as an advantage, giving her a different sense of self-confidence.
Criticism of Rationale
Critics argue Corgan's reasoning echoes long-held misogynistic ideas about women needing to be pure and unblemished. The commentary notes he generalizes women his age as "broken" and "undateable," while positioning himself as broken but entitled to a partner without trauma.
Context and Reaction
Mendel, now 33, is a fashion designer and creative director; the couple have three children and their wedding featured in a 2024 reality series. The Popcast interviewers pressed Corgan on his vague references to feminism and politics. Corgan also defended his friend Marilyn Manson during the same interview. While Corgan appeared happy discussing his relationship, the commentary raises concerns about infantilizing his wife and the implication that women with life experiences are less worthy partners.
