Walmart Faces Class Action Over Ice in Frozen Shrimp Weight

By Ahmed Abdelsalam

Walmart is facing a class action lawsuit alleging that its Great Value frozen shrimp packages contain excessive ice glaze, causing the net weight to include ice rather than just seafood.

Lawsuit Details

The suit was filed October 8 in Cook County, Illinois, by plaintiff Elijah Baptist. He claims he frequently purchases the product and discovered some bags contained up to 11 percent less shrimp than advertised.

FDA Guidelines and Allegations

According to the lawsuit, the ice glaze coating is standard to prevent freezer burn, but FDA rules prohibit including the glaze weight in the net product weight. Baptist argues Walmart's packaging violates these guidelines and state consumer laws.

Walmart Response

A Walmart spokesperson said the company has policies to ensure correctly labeled products and is reviewing the complaint, intending to respond in court.

Previous Recall

Great Value frozen shrimp was previously recalled in August 2025 due to possible contamination with Cesium-137, a radioactive isotope.
