Solo Dining Trend Grows as 40% of Restaurant Visits are Alone

By Islam El-Sakka

The trend of solo dining is experiencing significant growth as more individuals embrace the concept of taking themselves on dates. Recent data reveals that nearly 40 percent of all restaurant visits are now made by solo diners, reflecting a societal shift toward comfort with solitude.

Rising Statistics in Dining Habits

According to a report by Restaurant Business, citing data from the foodservice research platform Technomic Ignite, approximately 38 percent of restaurant visits this year are solo occasions. This marks a notable increase from roughly 30 percent recorded in 2019.

The trend is not limited to casual dining. Fine dining establishments have also seen a surge in solo patrons, with solo visits accounting for about 22 percent of fine dining experiences this year, compared to less than 10 percent in 2019.

A Long-Term Social Shift

While the popularity of dining alone has seen a boost in the post-pandemic era, the shift has been steadily progressing over the last two decades. Data from the 2025 World Happiness Report shows that in 2003, only about 17 percent of Americans reported eating all their meals alone the previous day. By 2023, that figure had risen to approximately 26 percent.

Industry experts note that consumers are increasingly receptive to the experience of being served while enjoying personal time. This includes activities such as watching television or using mobile devices while dining, allowing individuals to enjoy a restaurant experience on their own terms.
