The UK's autumn Budget for 2026 includes a significant increase to the tax-free trading allowance, benefiting individuals who earn income through platforms like Vinted and other side hustles. The measure aims to support the growing number of people generating supplementary income through online marketplaces and informal trading activities.
Key Changes to Trading Allowance
The Budget raises the threshold at which casual sellers must declare earnings to HM Revenue and Customs. Previously set at £1,000 per year, the enhanced allowance will allow platform users to earn more before triggering tax obligations. This change directly affects users of resale apps such as Vinted, Depop, and eBay, as well as freelancers and gig economy workers.
Support for Cost-of-Living Pressures
Alongside the trading allowance boost, the Budget introduces new bills support measures designed to ease household financial pressures. The combined package reflects the government's response to persistent inflation and the rising cost of living, targeting relief at lower and middle-income earners who rely on additional income streams.
